Hi Everyone... I am currently in my 18th year of teaching! Wow time goes by.. I am in my 18th year as a Head Wrestling Coach and 13th year coaching surfing, 10th year as a Head Surf Coach. I taught Science for my first 8 years teaching and have been teaching Physical Education for the last 10 years. I earned my B.S. in Kinesiology from Cal State Fullerton and took enough Physics to be able to teach H.S. Science. I earned my teaching credential from Whittier College and my Masters in Education from CSUSB.
Where I grew up and Wrestling: I struggled a bit in school in my early years. I can share with H.S. students how I improved. I grew up in Santa Fe Springs. Was involved with Student Council, Senior Class Social Chairperson. Wrestled all four years.. I started my first year wrestling - 1 win and 20 loses.. I worked hard, went on to win 3 Greco-Roman California State Titles and wrestled in front of 17,000 people at the University of Pacific, Stockton and in the homes across the country on Prime Ticket for the California High School Collegiate State Championships, placed 2nd to an opponent I had beaten 4x in close matches prior.. I went to Cerritos Jr. College, started out as #8 out of 8 guys in my weight class, by the end of the year was #1 in my weight and qualified for the J.C. State Championships where I contributed to my team placing 2nd in the State. After 1 year I transferred to Cal State Fullerton where I wrestled on a partial scholarship, worked in a computer lab 20 hours a week and managed the apartments I lived in, for room and food. I started college wrestling slow as well. I took my lumps, paid my dues and finally my senior year was wrestling in the Finals of the PAC-10 Championships where I upset the #1 seed in the pig tail round, revenged a loss to an Oregon State opponent and defeated a 3X NCCA D1 Qualifier in the Semi-Finals in double overtime.. I finished 2nd in the PAC-10. I went on to wrestle in the NCAA D1 Championships where I advancd to the 1/4 finals before losing to Oklahoma State and eventual champion. I then battled for a top 12 spot when I lost a close 1 point match to an opponent who I had beaten in a close match earlier in the year.. I have over the last 18 years just been trying to give back what I know and have learned through the sport of Wrestling to the high school students I have been so honored to work with. Working with high school kids is always a challenge in a good way!! That is what makes teaching / coaching such a great responsibility and privilege.
