Testing Time-Table for College-Bound Students

For all 4-year colleges, the SAT Test or ACT Test is required.

The UC colleges no longer require SAT Subject Tests for admission eligibility; however, certain disciplines within the UC system may use SAT Subject Tests for selectivity.  

Private Colleges and out of state universities may still require SAT Subject Tests for admission eligibility. It is recommended that you check with specific colleges for requirements. 

Freshmen Year

  • No standardized exams
  • Take the SAT Subject Test in June (check with specific college for requirements). Register online with the College Board at:  www.collegeboard.com.

Sophomore Year

  • ASPIRE:  Take the ASPIRE Test in the Fall for preparation for the ACT. Register at school.
  • PSAT:  Take the PSAT Test in the Fall for preparation for the SAT. Register at school.
  • SAT Subject Tests:  Take the SAT Subject Tests in June (check with specific college for requirements). Register online with the College Board at:  www.collegeboard.com.
  • College Test Assessment (CTA):  Take the CTA in January; a diagnostic test designed to expose students to both SAT and ACT questions in one test-taking experience. Register at school.
  • Mock ACT & SAT Tests:  Take a full-length practice test under realistic testing conditions in the Spring. Register at school.
  • Advanced Placement (AP):  These tests are taken in May. Students in AP classes prepare for these subject-oriented exams during the entire school year. Register at school in February.

Junior Year

  • PSAT:  Take this test in the Fall. National Merit Scholarships are linked to this exam. Register at school.
  • College Test Assessment (CTA):  Take the CTA in January; a diagnostic test designed to expose students to both SAT and ACT questions in one test-taking experience. Register at school.
  • MOCK ACT & SAT Tests:  Take a full-length practice test under realistic testing conditions in the Spring. Register at school.
  • ACT:  Test includes English, mathematics, reading, science reasoning, and writing. Register online with ACT at:  www.act.org.
  • SAT:  Test includes critical reading, mathematics, and writing.  Register online with the College Board at:   www.collegeboard.com.
  • SAT Subject TestsTake the SAT Subject Tests in June (check with specific college for requirements). Register online with the College Board at:  www.collegeboard.com.
  • Advanced Placement (AP):  These tests are taken in May. Students in AP classes prepare for these subject-oriented exams during the entire school year. Register at school in February.

Senior Year

 

  • Senior year should be left for score improvement on the SAT Test and/or ACT, and SAT Subject Tests (check with specific college for requirements). All testing should be completed in December. Important Note:  While many colleges will allow you to take up to the November and December test dates, check with the collegess to which you are applying to determine their policies and deadlines.
